Our May selection:
RONDIN DE BREBIS - FRANCE - SHEEPS’ MILK – PASTEURISED. A delicate and mellow sheeps’ milk cheese from Aveyron, France, Rondin de Brebis has been aged a minimum of 4 months. The flavour is well-balance and mild, with a rich and creamy mouthfeel that lingers. The thin rind is edible. Sheepy and barnyardy aromas waft from this soft, slightly crumbly-textured cheese. The brownish rind is especially pungent in taste, while the off-white paste balances out the rind’s strong flavors with unsalty, nutty, mildly sweet tones.
ISLE OF MULL / HEBRIDEAN BLUE - SCOTLAND– COWS’ MILK – UNPASTEURISED. Made by Jeff and Chris Reade on Scriob Ruadh Farm on the Isle of Mull could quite possibly be the bluest blue in the land (Britain that is). Somerset-dwellers originally, the Reades moved to the farm near Tobermory in 1979, well known for its bright buildings. They use a mixed herd of cows that are milked on a morning, all of which goes straight to cheese production, mainly their cheddar. It is often compared to Stilton with its strong, tangy nature; however we find more floral notes with a firmer texture.
ISLE OF AVALON - ENGLAND – COWS’ MILK – PASTEURISED - VEGETARIAN. Each Isle of Avalon begins its life as a Port Salut. It is then washed in wine in the UK which brings out the sticky, creamy goodness of a washed-rind cheese with a much fuller flavour than the Port Salut but the spongy texture remains. It has a strong, meaty flavour and is at its best when paired with crusty bread and a good pale ale. We love it as a soft cheese alternative in a Ploughmans. Golden orange in colour, the interior paste is smooth as silk.
TAVELLE DU VERNET - FRANCE– GOATS’ MILK – UNPASTEURISED. Tavelle du Vernet is a goat cheese made with raw milk in the shape of a cobble/ brick. It is a creamy, melting and tasty cheese and its lactic flavour/ aromas have a long finish in the mouth. Tavelle is a Bourbonnais word meaning "cobble."
MACLEANS TRADITIONAL OATCAKES – 150g. For over fifteen years the MacLean brothers have been baking the oatcakes in their bakery on the island of Benbecula (an island of the Outer Hebrides, in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Scotland) The small independent bakery prides itself on the quality of its products. Their oatcakes are sugar free and suitable for vegetarians. Wheat free oatmeal and oatflake oatcakes.
